Setting: Products requiring Hazmat Labels

Identify products that need hazardous-materials labeling when returned.

Set up products that require Hazmat labels to ship, so the correct label is generated when they're returned.

Where to find it

Settings > Returns > Shipping, under Return Shipping Settings.

What this is

Some products can't ship on an ordinary label. Conditions here identify which of your products need hazardous-materials labeling; Onward generates the appropriate Hazmat label when one is returned.

Products commonly classed as hazardous include:

  • Lithium batteries, and devices containing them

  • Aerosols — dry shampoo, sunscreen spray, deodorant

  • Flammable liquids, including many nail products and some fragrances

  • Certain cleaning products and solvents

Regulations vary by carrier and country. If you're unsure whether something in your catalog qualifies, check with your carrier — hazardous goods shipped on a standard label can be refused, delayed, or destroyed in transit.

If you need a Hazmat code that is not currently in the list, contact your Merchant Success Manager and we can add it for you.

Setting it up

  1. Tag the relevant products in Shopify — something explicit like hazmat.

  2. Click Conditions and add a rule matching that tag.

  3. Save.

Matching on a Shopify tag rather than individual products means new products inherit the rule automatically.
